Risk analysis of existing machines

Based on the EU Work Equipment Directive, you must periodically carry out a risk analysis on existing machinery. For example, in daily practice we encounter machines and installations that are, say, 40 or 50 years old, such as large hydraulic (indestructible) presses. Because CE marking did not exist at the time and the requirements were less stringent then, you must assess the safety of such machines.

For this, you use the risk analysis template based on the Work Equipment Directive, while also taking into account the requirements of the Machinery Directive.

In practice, this often reveals issues such as the need for additional guards, improper installation of the power cable, incorrectly implemented emergency stops or their absence, etc.

During the risk analysis, mechanical hazards (movement, pinch points, cutting hazards), electrical hazards, thermal hazards (heat, fire), noise and vibrations are assessed, as well as substances and emissions.

Subsequently, the assessment is made based on the likelihood of the hazard occurring, the severity of potential injury or damage, and the frequency of exposure.
