Non-automatic Weighing Instruments Explained

How does CE marking work for non-automatic weighing instruments?

Compliance with the Non-automatic Weighing Instruments Directive (2014/31/EU) is required for all non-automatic weighing instruments being sold in the European Economic Area (EEA).

A non-automatic weighing instrument is defined as: "one where an operator is involved in some part of the weighing process." For example:

Kitchen or bathroom scales

Retail and industrial weighing machines

Supermarket checkout weighing systems

Weighbridges

Laboratory and pharmaceutical balances

Medical weighing machines

It is the manufacturer’s legal responsibility to verify that their non-automatic weighing instrument complies with this directive before it is stamped with a CE mark and sold in the EEA by having a Notified Body certify conformity to the directive. This involves having a suitable product design/performance and proper documentary evidence (i.e. test reports, etc.) to show that the product complies with all relevant criteria in the directive.
